Dark Side of the Moon

The Dark Side of the Moon (with a wink to Pink Floyd) features intense dark colors and natural reed. The emphasis in this class will be on the use of a variety of weaving techniques using 3 sets of spokes as the diameter increases. This basket does requireone to stand while weaving, so please take note of that.

Jewel Toned Yarn Basket

For Advanced Ribbed Weavers come these beautiful renditions of the ribbed yarn basket. Students must choose to make either the basket made with 15” X 10” oval hoops or the larger size that uses 22” X 12” oval hoops. (Please state your preference when registering for class.)

Students will learn how to change colors within the god’s eyes, how to sight both primary and secondary ribs, how to make invisible color changes, wrap hand grips and weave to a successful conclusion. More than 20 colors of reed, dyed ribs and dyed seagrass will be used for this basket.

Please bring to class…a bucket, long awl, shears, sidecutters and a sharpened knife. This is a 2-day class.

Woven Star Basket

Learn how to weave this classic Star Basket – the tri-axle weave creates 6 points that you may choose to weave in all natural reed OR an accent color. Basket rounds out as the sides are woven and measures approximately 11” X 3 ½” on the sides. Lashed with cane. Wonderful for a bread basket or displayed on the wall.

Snake Charmer’s Basket

Especially for Shenandoah Creates students comes this very large, beautiful basket. It stands 28” tall and is 53” at its largest circumference. Wide spokes are dyed (unless you want to make it all natural – indicate so during registration) weaving is done with flat and flat oval. The side handles are wrapped with cane, and lashing is done with cane. Shaping and improving weaving skills will be emphasized. Anne will show you how to make a lid that fits this functional basket. This is a 2-day class.

Seashell #1 and #2

This unique basket is the result of years of study and weaving by Anne in her process of taking ribbed basketry to a sculptural form. Basket is made around a hardwood sapling that has been predrilled for primary ribs. Students begin the weaving, add secondary ribs, and continue weaving with dyed reed and seagrass. Dyed palm inflorescence may be added upon completion.

Discussion in class will include a drilling demonstration and explanation on how students can make other shells on their own. Other, more intricate shapes will be discussed during class.

Students need to decide if they would like to create the #1 shell, which is a simpler, more straightforward design, or the #2 shell which will be different in rib addition and be larger at one end of the shell.

Church’s Oval Double Wall Basket

This striking basket is double walled – it features many shades of space-dyed red (or green, depending on student choice) reed in various sizes on the inside. The exterior basket is woven in plain reed, with a zigzag pattern woven in it that picks up the color from the inside. Cats head base, dyed rim fillers and red (or green) leather handles. A very interesting rim lashing, this is a substantial basket, 7” X 15”, not including handles. One of the easiest double walls to make because of its construction!
